Privacy Policy

The short version

Your documents never leave your machine. The MarkedItDown desktop application runs entirely locally. No files are uploaded, no content is transmitted, no telemetry is collected. Period.

What MarkedItDown is

MarkedItDown is a desktop application that converts documents (PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and more) into Markdown format. It wraps Microsoft's open-source MarkItDown library in a local web UI served at localhost:5173.

Data the desktop app collects

None.

• No analytics, tracking pixels, or telemetry
• No cookies (the UI runs on localhost)
• No external network requests during conversion
• Conversion history is stored locally in history.json on your machine
• Settings are stored locally in settings.json on your machine

AI Enhancement (optional cloud feature)

If you choose to enable AI Enhancement and use our cloud API endpoint (api.markeditdown.io), the following applies:

• What is sent: The document content is sent to our API, which forwards it to Mistral AI for OCR/vision processing. We do not store your document content after processing is complete.
• What we store: Your email address (used to issue your API key), your API key, and a numeric credit balance. We do not store the content of your conversions.
• Third parties: Document content is processed by Mistral AI under their privacy policy. No other third parties receive your data.
• You can opt out: AI Enhancement is off by default. You can use your own API key with any OpenAI-compatible endpoint (including fully local options like Ollama) instead of our cloud service.

Data the website collects

This website (markeditdown.io) is a static page. We do not use analytics, tracking cookies, or third-party scripts. If you sign up for an API key, we store only your email address and API key as described above.

Payment processing

Credit pack purchases are processed by Lemon Squeezy. We do not store your payment card details. Lemon Squeezy handles all payment data under their own privacy policy.

Data retention

• Desktop app: All data stays on your machine. Delete the folder to remove everything.
• Cloud API: Email and API key are retained until you request deletion. Document content is not retained after processing.

Your rights

You can request deletion of your cloud API account and all associated data by emailing privacy@markeditdown.io. We will process deletion requests within 30 days.
